National Parks

The National Parks and Wildlife Refuges of Costa Rica are managed by MINAE, the Ministerio de Ambiental y Energia. Responding to the new policies of the MINAE, eleven Conservation Areas were established by this department in 1998 to oversee and manage the public lands of Costa Rica. These conservation areas are known as the Sistema Nacional de Areas de Conservacion, or SINAC.

Thanks to MINAE, this makes Costa Rica a dream come true for the nature lover. With such a large percentage of the countries land designated for the National Park system, there are literally rainforests and wildlife everywhere you look. Monkeys, Macaws, Blue Morphs and even the rare Wild Cat can be seen throughout the Costa Rican parks, possibly even right outside your condo door!

Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio Park is the most visited National Park in Costa Rica. This tropical rain forest is located on the Central Pacific coastline, surrounded by crystal clear Pacific waters and featuring some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the country.

An extensive trail system will lead you through a variety of ecosystems, where you can expect to see much wildlife. Some of the most common species found are white faced and titi monkeys, three toed sloths, raccoons, pizotes and many tropical birds.

Carara National Park

A mere 20 minute drive north of Los Sueños, Carara National Park offers endless wildlife viewing possibilities. As it is a transition zone between a drier region to the north and a wetter region to the south, Carara presents a wide diversity of plant life with over 1,400 plant species.

Birdwatchers will be interested in the Carara National Park area because the two life zones create a variety of birds, including one of the largest remaining wild populations of Scarlet Macaw in Costa Rica.

COSTA RICA IS FAMOUS FOR ITʼS BIODIVERSITY

Costa Rica hosts more than 5% of the worldʼs biodiversity even though its landmass only takes up .03% of the planet’s surface.

The odds of actually seeing wildlife are greater in Costa Rica than anywhere else in the world.

The country is home to 250 species of mammals, 850 species of birds, 1,240 species of butterflies, 1,013 varieties of fresh and salt water fish, 160 amphibian categories and much much more, with new species still being discovered each day!

The Explosion of a Lifetime!

Only ten people in every three million will see a volcanic eruption in their lifetime. Itʼs not something you want to miss!

You can imagine what an eruption may look like, but to see it in real life is like nothing you could have ever imagined.

The dark mountain set against a fiery explosion is heart stopping and absolutely magnificent.

There is truly nothing else like this, where you can see natureʼs power unfold right before your eyes.
